Movies I like

There’s a lot of movies that I really enjoy, and here are a few that are exceptionally good.

This list is in no particular order, just movies I enjoy.

The Dark Knight

Joker Nowdays superhero movies get a very bad rep for very, very good reason (Marvelslop!). However, Christopher Nolan’s “The Dark Knight” is the outlier, as in my opinion it is one of the greatest movies of all time.

The character of the Joker is a incredibly interesting villain and well-acted, motivated by philosophy instead of something more materialistic or “power” like in so many other movies. Everything is incredibly well paced, written, and directed throughout the film. It was one of the first movies shot in IMAX and it looks incredible because of that. The music is composed by Hans Zimmer and makes great use of Leitmotifs. This movie is Christopher Nolan at his best and highly recommend this to anyone as it’s not too complicated or long.

Shin Godzilla

Godzilla Hideaki Anno’s best live-action film, Shin Godzilla is a very entertaining satirical kaiju-political movie, believe it or not. The movie centers around Godzilla attacking Tokyo and the government’s extremely poor response. The governement is staffed by indecisive, clueless bureaucrats who refer to useless “experts” for everything, need to go through red tape for every single little decision, hold press conferences every hour, and always infighting. The movie is a great portrayal of the inefficiency of large organizations and comical at times. It isn’t until a dictatorship like in the Roman Republic takes over the effort that Godzilla is finally defeated. The movie also is very nationalistic, correctly portraying the status of modern-day Japan as a sort of colony of America, and throughout, the US is often shown to be overbearing in Japanese affairs and promotes a more independent Japan like what Prime Minister Abe wanted.

Everything is extremely fast paced throughout the movie, the action scenes are tense, and the music composed by Shiro Sagisu is great throughout. Anno’s trademark style is immediately recognizable, with fast close up shots, lots of droning landscape shots, strange angles shot from things like Gopros and iPhones, artistically it is very good. It also appeals to my interest in military gear, with lots of military helicopters, Type 10 tanks, F-2A jets, Apaches, B-2 bombers, and MOPs.

This is another film I can suggest to anyone, especially Evangelion fans. The whole movie is basically one long Angel battle, shot and directed in an almost identical way to Evangelion. I cannot suggest this movie enough.

A Clockwork Orange

clockwork This movie isn’t quite so easy to suggest as other films. It’s extremely violent and dark, but despite all that I like this movie. The protagonist of the movie, Alex, is so deranged and hard to relate to that he makes for an interesting character. The themes of the futility of psychology and tampering with human nature I find very interesting. There is also a large emphasis on Beethoven which I enjoyed. If you’re interested in dark themes, dystopia, or Beethoven, watch this.
